Don Wassall- Boris Yeltsin was the president of Russia from 1991 to 1999, just as the Soviet Empire was dissolving. The immediate post-USSR period, when the Eastern European satellites were freed and the “soviet republics” became independent countries and Russia once again became Russia, was marked by rapid decline and weakness in Russia as the nation’s resources and wealth was freely pillaged both by internal oligarchs and external ones along with Western multi-nationals.
